Best Practices

Emergency Management Case Studies

FEMA’s Continuous Improvement Technical Assistance Program (CITAP) team is compiling lessons learned and best practices in emergency management on topics across various threats and hazards. Partners across all levels of government may use these best practices to enhance their response and recovery operations after disasters. The best practices are hosted in a repository of case studies on FEMA.gov. The CITAP team will update this page as new best practices become available for different threats and hazards. For best practices in continuous improvement, please visit the Training or Templates and Resources page on this site.

Coronavirus Emergency Management Best Practices

In response to the coronavirus (COVID-19), FEMA tracked and aggregated global lessons learned and best practices in emergency management regarding pandemic response and recovery efforts. The CITAP team compiled these best practices into documents that cover topics such as:

  • Food Banks
  • Government Engagement with Citizens
  • Considerations for People with Disabilities
  • Community Emergency Response Teams
  • Volunteer Management

The COVID-19 best practice documents are available on the Coronavirus Emergency Management Best Practices page on FEMA.gov. The FEMA CITAP team is currently converting these best practice documents to a more searchable format. Users can search through best practices by keyword or filter by community lifelines and core capabilities. As documents are converted, they will be available on the COVID-19 Best Practices collection page on FEMA.gov.
